This series of workshops are designed to allow participants to focus on a particular element of electronic music production over 2 sessions, 2 hours each. It is strongly advised that participants have some familiarity and working knowledge of Ableton Live for many of the workshops in this series.  (Our SessionMaster workshop is recommended prior to these workshops).

Remix!

Learn how to Remix using Ableton Live

Two x 2 hour sessions: $89.00

  • This 2Plus2 session, (2 sessions x 2 hours each), is a production oriented workshop designed for producers or ‘soon to be’ producers interested in jumping into the remix world.  The workshop will use Ableton Live and in particular the “Arrangement Page” as the launching point into remix production.  The workshop is perfect for those interested in developing their production skill through remixing.

    Note: We provide laptops that are preconfigured for all of out Ableton Live workshops.

    Difficulty:  Easy to Medium

    We recommend some working experience with a previous version of Ableton Live or participation in Wired’s SessionMaster workshop.  Experience with an alternative DAW may also be sufficient for this workshop.

    Who should attend?

    1. Anyone those interested in developing their production skill through remixing,
    2. Anyone curious about Ableton Live and looking to dig deeper into its capabilities

    Topics include:

    1. Stems:  what are they, where to find them, how to use them,
    2. DIY Accapella: Isolating vocals to get accapellas and isolating other parts of a song to use in a remix,
    3. Convertings audio to midi,
    4. BPM, Chords, Key: Tips and tricks to finding,
    5. Genre based remixing:  reworking songs into a new genre.
    6. Overview of warping and warping algorithms.

Hip Hop/Sampling

Hip Hop Sampling

Two x 2 hour sessions: $89.00

  • This 2Plus2 session, (2 sessions X 2 hours each),  workshop is a production oriented workshop designed for producers or ‘soon to be’ producers interested in jumping into the remix world.  The workshop will use Ableton Live and in particular the “Arrangement Page” as the launching point into remix production.   Explore the production methods used by Kayne West, DJ shadow, and almost all classic 90s hiphop producers.

    Who should take this workshop?

    1. Aspiring hip-hop producers,
    2. Rappers looking to produce their own beats
    3. Those looking to do supplement their production skills with sample based elements

    Note: We provide laptops that are preconfigured for all of out Ableton Live workshops.

    Difficulty:  Easy to Medium

    Recommend some working experience with a previous version of Ableton Live  or participation in Wired’s  SessionMaster  workshop.  Experience with an alternative DAW may also be sufficient for this workshop.

    Topics include:

    1. Using turntables to sample into Ableton Live
    2. Using Mp3 and wave files to sample into able
    3. Warping and using warp algorithms
    4. Re-sampling into sampler to cut up sections of songs and drum beats
    5. Cutting up drums to build drum kits from samples
    6. MPC based sample sequencing to create loops.
    7. Effects to blends recorded samples with synth production
    8. Drum sequencing with recorded loops

DIY Recording

Learn to record at home and get your best results

Two x 2 hour sessions: $89.00

  • This 2Plus2 session, (2 sessions X 2 hours each),  is geared toward learning how to record at home using common home studio equipment (inexpensive), to achieve the best  sound possible.  The workshop will provide recording tips and techniques, an introduction to microphone theory, digital audio, tracking and acoustics…basically the 1,2,3, to become a ‘bedroom’ engineer/producer.  As such you will working with gear that might be easily found in a bedroom recording environment not some fully blown recording studio.   This is a ‘hands-on’ practical workshop where students will engineer a small session including set up and using their ears to get a solid sound from the source.

    Note: We provide laptops that are preconfigured for all of our Ableton Live workshops.

    Difficulty:  Easy, Beginner Level 

    Recommend some working experience with  Ableton Live  or participation in Wired’s  SessionMaster  workshop.  Experience with an alternative DAW (Garageband, Logic etc.) would be helpful but not necessary  for this workshop. 

    Who should attend?

    1. Musicians or vocalists with limited or no experience in recording and have struggled to use a DAW they have acquired for their “bedroom studio”. 
    2. EDM performers/producers that have worked mostly in Ableton’s Session page and want to gain an understanding of recording with Ableton Live.   
    3. Anyone curious about what Ableton Live might add to production environment. 

    Topics include (but not limited too):

    • Tracking, Multitracking, Punch in, Punch out.  
    • Head phone cues 
    • Microphone theory 
    • Reverb, compression, EQ and other F/X 
    • Computer optimization, buffering, latency 
    • Soundcard set ups,  
    • Basic acoustics and how they impact a recording

Live4Live

Learn to use Ableton Live in live performance

Two x 2 hour sessions: $89.00

  • This 2Plus2 session, (2 sessions X 2 hours each),  is designed for performers or ‘soon to be’ performers interested in adding the capability to Ableton Live to their performance, without get bogged down by technology or adding unnecessary risk to the flow of a set.  Live Looping, Controllerism, Effects, Hacks, Setup Tips and Hardware requirements are all explored.

    Note: We provide laptops that are preconfigured for all of out Ableton Live workshops.

    Difficulty:  Easy to Medium

    Recommend some working experience with a previous version of Ableton Live  or participation in Wired’s  SessionMaster  workshop.  Experience with an alternative DAW may also be sufficient for this workshop.

    Who should attend?

    1. Musicians or vocalists – wants to change patches, et up keyboard splits, launch samples or tun in special effects real time for specific songs.
    2. Live loop as musicians/singers, play, loop, simple minimal effects,
    3. EDM performers/producers, – limited or no experience in performance, requires safety nets to trigger samples from PUSH or APC but be time quantized.  Think Daftpunk or Chainsmokers type performances.
    4. EDM performs/producesr wants to hack a controller and achieve higher level of control or has specific need that requires addressing.
    5. Anyone curious about what Ableton Live might add to your performance.

    Topics include:

    1. Controllerism – hardware control of Ableton Live
    2. Hacking controllers, Mackie control, Midi learn, Ableton Controller scripts
    3. Live Lopping with Session View
    4. Live Lopping with lopper plug-ins, (available in Standard and Suite versions only)
    5. Processing live signals, latency, live effects on microphones or instruments
    6. Dummy clips, automation tricks
    7. Smart knobs using macros  (build one knob DJ style effects)
